Boris Mykytovych Mankovsky, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor.
Author of 906 scientific publications, including more than 450 published abroad, and 12 monographs, two of which were published abroad (Canada and the United States of America). He has a high citation index according to Google Scholar (h-index 46) and Scopus (h-index 20).
In 2009, B.M. Mankovsky was invited to join an international team of authors to prepare the monograph Diabetes and the Brain. He authored the chapter “Stroke and Diabetes Mellitus,” which received favourable reviews in international scientific journals.
B.M. Mankovsky’s scientific research has been recognised with a number of prestigious awards at international scientific congresses, including the Prize for the Best Scientific Presentation at the Symposium of the Congress of the International Diabetes Federation (Baltimore, USA, 1991), the Prize for Clinical Research of the Neurodiab Research Group (Budapest, 2002), and others. In 2023, B.M. Mankovsky was awarded the V.P. Komisarenko Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
B.M. Mankovsky is the founder of a scientific school in the fields of endocrinology and diabetology. He has supervised 10 Doctors of Medical Sciences and 15 Candidates of Medical Sciences.
Professor B.M. Mankovsky is widely known among colleagues abroad.
He has worked at leading diabetology centres worldwide: Northwestern University in Chicago (1992–1993), the University of Miami (USA) (2001–2002), and the National Diabetes Institute in Düsseldorf (Germany) (1999).
He is the only scientist and physician from Ukraine to have been elected to the Executive Board (Presidium) of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (2005). He was also elected a member of the Executive Board of the Working Group on Diabetic Neuropathy of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (2009). He has delivered numerous oral presentations at major world and European endocrinology and diabetology forums and, at the invitation of organisers, has chaired symposia and conferences.
He has experience in managing international scientific projects. In 2013, he became the first scientist in this field of science and medicine to receive a major research grant from the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes for a collaborative study with researchers from Utrecht University (the Netherlands) on the association between cognitive impairment, cerebral blood flow, and structural changes in the central nervous system in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
In 2014, he was invited to join an international scientific consortium of medical researchers from many countries established to study the prevalence and risk factors of depressive disorders in patients with diabetes mellitus (Dialogues Diabetes and Depression).
In 2015 and 2016, he became the first scientist from Ukraine to be invited to membership of the Programme Committee of the Annual Congress of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes—the most significant congress in the field, which attracts more than 15,000 participants each year.
In 2009, he organised for the first time in Ukraine a postgraduate education course of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. These courses attracted participants not only from Ukraine but also from many European countries. Lecturers included leading scientists and practising physicians from Europe. A positive report on the courses was published in the world’s leading diabetology journal Diabetologia. Following the first courses, in collaboration with the Postgraduate Education Committee of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and the Shupyk National Academy of Postgraduate Education, a further six educational courses were held in Ukraine; these now constitute an important event in the educational landscape of the field.
He is a reviewer for leading international journals, including the British Medical Journal, Diabetes Care, Diabetic Medicine, Journal of the Neurological Sciences, and others.
Since 2011, B.M. Mankovsky has been the founder and Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Diabetology Association. The association’s members include nearly all endocrinologists in Ukraine, as well as family physicians and physicians of related specialties. B.M. Mankovsky is a member of the Presidium of the Ukrainian Association of Endocrinologists.
B.M. Mankovsky has been elected a member of the Academic Council of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and has served as an expert of the State Expert Centre of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. For many years he performed the duties of Chief Freelance Specialist in Endocrinology and member of the expert group in this field of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
On a voluntary basis, B.M. Mankovsky serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Diabetes Obesity Metabolic Syndrome, which is indexed in several scientometric databases. He is a member of the editorial boards of the international scientific medical journals Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology (USA), International Journal of Biomedicine (USA), and Journal of Diabetes and its Complications (USA), as well as the Ukrainian journals Endocrinology, Problems of Endocrine Pathology, International Journal of Endocrinology, Kidneys, Heart and Vessels, and a number of others. He is fluent in English and has repeatedly delivered lectures and scientific presentations in English at major international scientific forums at which English was the working language.
He is a member of the specialised Academic Councils of the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine and the State Institution “V.P. Komisarenko Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” for the defence of Candidate’s and Doctoral theses in the specialty “Endocrinology.”
B.M. Mankovsky’s scientific interests are related to the study of the mechanisms of development and the development of methods for the treatment of age-associated diseases, such as diabetes mellitus and diseases of the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
B.M. Mankovsky conducts extensive clinical practice, consulting patients at the clinical bases of the Department of Diabetology as well as at the medical institutions of the State Administration of Affairs under the President of Ukraine, the medical service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Security Service of Ukraine.
He is actively engaged in teaching. He organised the first Department of Diabetology in Ukraine at the Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine. He frequently delivers lectures in various regions of the country on different aspects of diabetes mellitus and its complications. He consistently promotes and advocates training in the fundamentals of disease self-management for patients with diabetes mellitus, participates in the work of public organisations, and carries out substantial work on the development of modern unified treatment protocols for major endocrine diseases.
